What is Colour Grading?

Shoot it Right: The first step in colour grading, shoot good footage to work with later. Almost all cameras add extra contrast and sharpness to the right image to make it look better. This can actually make colour grading more difficult. If you want to colour grade your footage afterwards you have to shoot a flat image, this means setting your cameras default contrast and saturation settings. This provides more freedom to manipulate the image further on your computer. It preserves the details in shadows and highlights.

Colour Correction Vs Colour Grading

For any footage, it is a combined process of colour correction and colour grading which takes it to next level. But what is the difference between colour correction and colour grading?

Colour Correction is matching your shots with balanced colours, whereas colour grading is all about style. The majority of colour grading programs or plug-ins work similarly. You can control the brightness and colour balance of your footage using colour wheels

These are generally categorized into three groups Highs, Mids and Lows. Adjusting each one of these adjusts the corresponding range of your footage. Not all the video editing program has the colour wheels but your program should have the similar filters.

When correcting your footage one has to match the brightness between the shots and fix any tints caused in changing the white balance or lighting conditions. If the shot is blue you can simply add orange or if it is too orange you can add blue.

For colour grading there aren’t any rules however if you want to reach professional result these are the following rules to be kept in mind.

Keep your details

Keep as much details in your shot as you can. Try not to crush your shadows too far or blow out your highlights. All the professional cameras can sense more detail in these areas and you need to balance it.

Skin Tones

Always keep a close eye on skin tones of your subject. Whatever colours you correct, you always want you’re subject to look more natural. No one wants to look at people with extreme tints of colours. Video scopes are handy tools for this. They provide reference for how you grade is actually affecting you footage. It is always better to use if you have in your software.

Grading Styles

Colour Split: If you are looking for an interesting way of colour grading your footage try colour split where you move one colour of the wheel in one direction and then the other in opposite to compensate, by doing so you can produce some interesting colour contrasts.

Vignettes: Adding vignettes to your footage can really make it pop. There are a lot of ways in achieving it; some colour grading programs provide ways to mask your footage letting you to softly darken the edges of the footage. You can experiment with different blending modes for different results.

Hue Shifts: Many programs let you to isolate certain colours so that you can adjust them. Playing with this can also provide some dramatic effects.

Regardless of what colour grade you choose just make sure you keep it natural and subtle as when people are watching the whole video and if it stands out too much it can distract them.

How to : Arangetram Live Streaming and Webcasting

Arangetram is the name refers to a debut dance performance of south Indian traditional Bharatanatyam. The word Arangetram was taken from two Tamil words Arangam and Erru which together mean ‘to ascend the stage’. The practise of Arangetram for Bharatanatyam is developed as a tradition from ancient days. Arangetram is the platform where the Sishya (student) exhibits all the skills which are trained by his/her Guru. The Arangetram is done for 3 hours where the performer requires a lot of concentration and stamina. The time is generally divided into two parts.

In this item the performer salute the God, Guru and the Audience. It is considered as a warm up item where the performer prepares the body for the rest of the vigorous performance of Bharatnatyam.

Jathiswara

This item comprises of more complex movements compared to the previous item. It is carried with amazing postures and teermanas or muktayas.

Shabda

Shabda is the item where they exhibit both Nrtta and abhinaya. The lyrics are generally devotional where they depict the sequence from any famous devotional stories, praising King or about Krishna’s childhood. The movements are composed in a poised manner revealing the emotions in a measured and disciplined manner.

Varnam

This item defines the potential of the performer with more complex steps and expressions of Bhartanatyam. The lyrics can be devotional.

Padam

This item includes expression of divine love or pangs of separation in love. The composition of the tempo is comparatively slow depending on specific moods of love. It has a lot of scope for the performer to show the skills of expression as the lyrics are carried on the lines of hero betraying her beloved one, making the heroine to wait for his arrival or making her angry etc.,

Ashtapathi

This item generally shows the love of Lord Krishna and Radha. These are poet Jayadevas Sanskrit compositions called Geethagovinda which are extremely romantic compositions. These have 12 cantos containing songs which are sung by Krishna or Radha or by Radha’s maid. Each canto is named differently based on Krishna’s status of mind.

Saamodadamodara – joyful Krishna

Aakleshakeshava – careless Krishna

Mugdhamadhusoodhana – bewildered Krishna

Snigdhamadhusoodhana – tender Krishna

Saakankshapundareekaksha – longing Krishna

Kuntavaikunta – indolent Krishna

Naagaranaaraayana – cunning Krishna

Vilakshalakshmeepatihi – abashed Krishna

Mandamukunda – languishing Krishna

Chaturachaturbhuja – intelligent Krishna

Saanandadamodara – blissful Krishna

Supreetapeetambara – ecstatic Krishna

Expressions play a vital role in this item where the expression can only be delivered if the Bharatanatyam dancer is mature enough in understanding the situation and lyrics.

Devaranama

This item has devotional lyrics describing God, praising God etc., These compositions are popularly known as Daasa Sahi where the devotional literature written in simple language and preach the philosophy of love, devotion etc.,

Tillana

This is usually considered as the final stage of the Bharatanatyam performance which has more complicated movements and postures including complicated muktayas. The compositions are combined with meaningful lyrics where the performer has opportunity to exhibit Abhinaya.

Mangala

This item is the ending of the performance where the artist salutes the God, Guru and the Audience for making the performance a success as a token of thanks giving.

The performance of the dancer is accompanied with a live orchestra with highly talented and accomplished artists. The orchestra is clubbed with a nattuvanar, Vocal artist, Mridangam, Flute, Violin.

Nattuvangam

The art of conducting Indian traditional dance performance is known as nattuvangam, and the artist who conduct is known as the nattuvanar. He/She plays a vital role in defining the structure of the composition which is commonly known as Thalam.

Vocal artist

These are generally performed by a trained Carnatic (classical South Indian) vocalist. The lyrics of the composition play a crucial role in defining the expression of the performer. Each set of song is accompanied with a specific ragam and talam.

Mridangam

Mridangam can be called as a heart of the orchestra as the structural rhythmic beats produced are utilized by the dancer in performing the steps.

Flute

A bamboo flute which is commonly called as pullanguzhal plays a prominent role in Carnatic music which distinctively different from Western flute. The main responsibility for the flutist is to maintain the tune with the other musicians.

Violin

The violin is almost similar to the Western violin but the tuning and the way it is positioned while playing it is different. Violin plays an integral role by making the audience glue to the performance.

Workflow of Live Video Streaming

Input is what the raw footage that is shot with either your camera or webcam from the desired location. The resolution could be a desired choice depending on the user’s interest. The quality of the resolution implies the bitrate, the average bitrate varies from 15 to 20 Mbps for 1920X1080. Bitrate is nothing but the rate of bits that are transferred within the given amount of time. It is generally measured in bps (bits per second) it could be kbps (Kilobits per second) or Mbps (Megabits per second). The quality of the video is always proportional to the bitrate.

Conversion

The data recorded is transmitted as analog signals. As computers take only binary information which is nothing but digital format, there has to be a conversion of data from analog to digital. This is where we use analog to digital converter or ADC which makes the conversion. During this process there will be a loss of resolution and bitrate depending on the characteristics of the ADC converter.

Media Server is no longer a simple streaming server, it now packages video files to various formats and integrates peer to peer and real time communication and enables media delivery to desktops or devices with either android or iOS.
